WinterLight
2008 opens a window onto Oxfordshire
16 October 2008
A dazzling calendar
of events for the festive season is taking shape highlighting
Christmas light switch-ons, pantomimes and special outdoor
events in towns all across the county including Oxford’s
WinterLight on Friday 28 November.
The event features an evening feast of light, street performance,
art, music, science, opera in everyone’s favourite museums,
art galleries, theatres and on the streets. Follow the culture
trail, stopping off to see late-night exhibitions and one-off
shows at each location. Eight museums, galleries and theatres
in the city will host live music and themed events whilst
offering refreshment and entertainment to visitors into the
night from 6pm to 10.30pm.
The
West End Partnership is delighted to unveil the Bonn
Square development on the same evening, and is celebrating
by joining Oxford Inspires, supported by
Arts
Council England and Awards
for All, for a wonderful line-up of on-street performances.
The wonderful French brass band Les
Grooms will create a special musical fanfare that
will bring the new square to life. Spectacular outdoor illuminated
processions featuring giant lanterns, school groups and live
musicians will make their way through different parts of the
city centre before converging on Broad Street.
The dramatic centrepiece of the evening’s festivities
will be International street theatre company Walk
the Plank who will transform Broad Street with a
huge illuminated solar system heralding the start of the International
Year of Astronomy 2009.
WinterLight is being made possible by supporters Arts
Council England, Awards

We are delighted to announce Kids Go Free!
The Oxford Bus Company is offering free travel after 6pm
on November 28 to children ages 5–15 years (up to 3
per adult—children travelling solo pay normal fare—applies
only to local buses and Park and Ride).
Oxford Inspires will soon be launching an
advent calendar brochure with an event from
a town around the county behind each little window, giving
a county-wide themed design celebration of culture and light
through the winter. Ten of the windows of the advent calendar
will be represented by specially commissioned art installations
in shop windows made either by professional artists or with
artists working with children and community groups all over
the county.
Artistic installations are being created in partnership with
the arts development officers of West Oxfordshire, Cherwell
and Vale of the White Horse District Councils, project managed
by Lois Muddiman for Oxford Inspires. The
full programme of events running from 25 November until 22
December will be published on this website and the advent
calendar brochure will be distributed around the county in
November.
