Powerful projection: the multi-coloured Ox
Thursday 22 June, 2006
One of Oxfordshire's most familiar
landmarks was used to signal another landmark—the county's 1000th
birthday—in a unique projection on 21 June, the longest day of the
year.
Oxfordshire
2007 is a programme of festivals and special events to celebrate the
county's very own millennium—and its new symbol made a debut appearance
at npower's Didcot
Power Station, whose giant cooling towers can be seen across the Thames
Valley. The image, which is planned to be seen in a range of unusual locations
throughout the coming months, was projected at dusk, the 'golden hour',
on to the outside of a 114m-high tower.

Oxfordshire 2007 aims to turn
the county inside out, reinventing public places and spaces and introducing
people to new and exciting creative experiences.
The spotlight will be turned
on more than 70 festivals, some of them new—including a food festival
especially for children—plus a clutch of special
events for 2007, including a giant picnic, events along the River
Thames, street theatre and more projections.
"We want to involve as
many people, organisations and businesses as possible", said Cath
Nightingale, marketing director of Oxford Inspires, the cultural development
agency for Oxfordshire, which is coordinating the project.
"We're delighted that Didcot
Power Station has entered into the spirit of Oxfordshire 2007—with
a spark of imagination, a dash of innovation and a sense of occasion."
John Rainford, manager of Didcot
Power Station said: "Didcot A powers millions of homes across the
country, making a vital contribution to the UK's energy supply and to
the local economy. The station and particularly the cooling towers are
an iconic image of Didcot and of Oxfordshire. We are delighted Oxford
Inspires has chosen us to help publicise this historic date in Oxfordshire’s
history."
"Energy is at the centre
of our business and at the heart of our work in the community. The projection
shows our enthusiasm to be involved with Oxfordshire 2007 and we look
forward to further collaboration next year."
