Oxford Inspires publishes details
of £600,000 bid to the Urban Cultural Programme
Fri 14 May, 2004
Oxford Inspires today released
details of its bid to the Urban Cultural Programme for a share of the
£15 million of lottery money being made available to support cultural
programmes in urban areas. The results of the bidding process will be
known in the second half of July.
The bid submitted by Oxford Inspires on behalf of the city of Oxford is
for a cultural programme in 2005 entitled Evolving City. Oxford Inspires
has applied for £600,000 to support the programme, which consists
of 28 projects involving a wide range of organisations in Oxford and Oxfordshire.
The projects are grouped under five themes: Oxford 2015: Regeneration;
Artists and Communities; Festivals development; Science in the City and
Oxford and Europe.
The projects in the bid range from plans to bring artists from the newly-joined
EU countries to Oxford to a series of creative learning and environmental
projects on the estates of Blackbird Leys, Rose Hill and Barton. Science
will be an important component of the programme, as will the regeneration
of public spaces. The finale to the 2005 programme will be a winter Ice
Garden, created by ‘Produced with OOMF!’, the organisation
responsible for Oxfordshire’s Own Millennium Festival.
Commenting on the bid, Robert Hutchison, Chief Executive of Oxford Inspires,
said, “The process of bringing together the Evolving City bid involved
many organisations in Oxford, some well known, some less so. We are confident
that the bid we have put together will, if successful, benefit many different
communities and individuals in Oxford. We hope too that many of the project
proposals that didn’t find their way into the bid may still be able
to happen with support from other sources.”
Whatever the outcome of the bid, Oxford Inspires plans to coordinate a
programme of events in Oxford in 2005 under the heading Evolving City.
Note:
The Urban Cultural Programme, which was announced at the beginning of
March, is offering a total fund of £15 million for cultural projects
in urban areas across the UK. The awards under the scheme will be made
by the Millennium Commission and Arts Council England. The minimum individual
grant will be £500,000.
