2008 WinterLight Festival

Opening Windows onto a Winter World

Oxfordshire artists have been invited by Oxford Inspires to create special seasonal art installations for a series of shop windows across the county, starting from 28 November.

The project, Winter Windows, which received funding from Arts Council England, has led to some stunning visual displays which will form part of the Christmas and festive celebrations in towns and villages.

In particular, these windows presented an opportunity for young, local artists to showcase their work and start their careers. Many of them are graduates of Oxford Brookes School of Arts and Humanities.

The themes for these contemporary art installations include light and water, light and shadows, icicle lanterns, a window on to a tiny world and books inspired by the local library.

Local artists have been working with schools and community groups to create windows in Deddington, Eynsham, Faringdon, Witney, Wallingford, Botley and Oxford city centre.

These artists include:

  • Sally Austin, working with pupils from Matthew Arnold School
  • and photographer Helen White working with 3D artist Pam Foley, Deddington Youth Club and the Windmill Club

We hope that people will be inspired to make their own windows in the future!
