Oxfordshire 2007: A Year to Remember
2007 was a special year for Oxfordshire. The county turned 1000 years old and gave us an opportunity to celebrate its rich past and dynamic present through festivals, special events, exhibitions and community celebrations. Oxfordshire 2007 highlighted all that makes the county such a great place to live in or to visit: its remarkable people and achievements, its vibrant culture, its rich heritage, lively towns and natural beauty.
Almost 350 events were featured and over 200 cultural and community organisations took part. Highlights included a spectacular fire, light and music event Luminox which transformed Oxford’s Broad Street over 3 days in March and attracted 20,000 visitors, the first ever Children’s Food Festival in the UK which took place just outside Abingdon in July and Alice’s Day which saw 32 Oxford organisations co-operate in a day of storytelling, tea parties and performance to celebrate the city’s status as a world centre of children’s literature and the home of Alice in Wonderland.
Oxford Inspires coordinated and promoted
the year, providing marketing, press and PR support, stimulating
a number of special events and new festivals alongside showcasing
the work of cultural organisations and cultural groups in
the length and breadth of the county. Financial support from
Oxfordshire County Council, Oxford City Council, Arts Council
England, the local business community and many other partners
helped to make it a birthday party to remember!
