Doug
Scott CBE, legendary mountaineer,
‘A Crawl Down the Ogre'
7.30
pm, Thursday 27th November 2008
Doug Scott, the first Briton
to reach the summit of Everest, is giving an illustrated
talk in Oxford on Thursday 27th November to raise
funds for the charity Community
Action Nepal (CAN) which he set up 10 years ago.
Doug Scott will recount the perilous descent that
he and Chris Bonington made in 1977 from from the
Ogre in the Pakistan Himalayas after Scott broke both
legs at the summit. Bonington then broke his ribs
and the two men had to find tremendous mental and
physical resources to get off the mountain and survive.
For Scott, “after breaking my legs in a mishap
at the summit, the descent became a test of will power
and survival instinct, crawling and abseiling off
the mountain. It was a severe lesson which I was lucky
to survive and am not anxious to repeat”.
All the money raised at the talk will help Community
Action Nepal to fund health posts, schools, clean
water projects and porter rescue shelters in the mountain
regions of Nepal. The 40 new and existing projects
benefit around 150,000 Nepali people and cost around
£100,000 year to support. Visit their website
at www.canepal.org.uk.
For Doug Scott, the main reason for CAN’s existence
is to increase the general happiness of the Nepalese
hill people. “CAN provides a vehicle for hill
walkers, mountaineers and the general public to support
improvements in health and education in Nepal. By
supporting this CAN event in Oxfordshire, you will
help to make a real difference on the ground in Nepal.”
Oxford University's Saïd
