Winston Churchill, Oxfordshire Hussar

This exhibition examines Churchill’s enthusiasm for soldiering, part of his life that is usually passed over in favour of his political career. Originally a professional soldier, he left the Army in 1900 after several very dangerous adventures to pursue politics. He soon joined the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars and was extremely active with them until the First World War, even whilst busy as a minister.

The History of Woodstock and Blenheim on Film affords the visitor a nostalgic look at Woodstock, seen through the lens of Dr. Tothill, a Mayor of Woodstock (1960), Alderman (1965) and local GP from the 1930s until his retirement in 1970. During Dr. Tothill’s time in Woodstock he filmed many events in Woodstock and at Blenheim. Seven episodes from his collection have been made into digital films.

This photographic exhibition features the captivating and thought-provoking photography of TA Reservist Major Paul Smyth, a Territorial Army Officer from Henley, documenting his tour of duty in Afghanistan between April and October 2010.

Shezad Dawood: Piercing Brightness

The first major solo exhibition of British artist Shezad Dawood features his most ambitious works to date. Trailer (2011) is a distilled version of the artist’s feature film Piercing Brightness, which uses science fiction as a prism through which to contest notions of race, migration and identity. Presented alongside Trailer is New Dream Machine Project (2011), comprising a large-scale kinetic light sculpture and Super 16mm film.

The 45,000 Installation

The 45,000 Installation conveys the large number of people affected by ME. Anita Roddam, who has been bedbound for six years, set up a 'travelling installation' of 45 sheets of 1,000 ribbons. Each ribbon symbolises one of the 45,000 individuals who are thought to be housebound or bedbound with the illness in the UK.

The Oxford Art Society was founded in 1891 and is an umbrella organisation for accomplished artists living in Oxfordshire, many of whom also exhibit nationally and internationally. The Oxford Art Society holds regular meetings and welcomes submissions from all Oxfordshire artists to their annual OAS Open Exhibition of selected work held each autumn. A selection of OAS members are exhibiting at West Ox Arts as part of Oxfordshire Artweeks.
