Oxfordshire 2012

The Oxfordshire 2012 Partnership was established by the County Council in February 2010, in order to ensure that the London 2012 Games have a positive and lasting social and economic impact on Oxfordshire. Co-ordinated by Oxford Inspires and working with a range of partner organisations – including all District Councils, the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership, Thames Valley Police, Blenheim Estates and the University of Oxford – the Oxfordshire 2012 Partnership aims to ensure that the communities of Oxfordshire have the opportunity to take inspiration from the Games and have a chance to get involved.

Oxford as World Book Capital City 2011

From 2001 UNESCO has nominated a World Book Capital City to acknowledge the best year-long programme proposed by a city to promote books and foster reading. The International Publishers Associations (IPA-UIE), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and the International Booksellers Federation (IBF) are represented with UNESCO in the nominating committee. The nomination does not imply any financial prize, but is exclusively a symbolic acknowledgement.

A successful programme will involve cooperation with the national and international professional organizations representing writers, publishers, booksellers and librarians as well as communities and groups which encourage and promote reading.

MINI Plant Oxford Supports Film and Dance

This year Dancin’ Oxford kicks off on February 16th at MINI Plant Oxford. Guests will be invited to watch the premier of a dance and film piece, inspired by the MINI Plant and specifically created for the launch by choreographer Cecilia Macfarlane, film maker Roly Carline and OFVM Film Oxford. The piece, which took its inspiration from the many hundreds of robots that operate in the factory’s bodyshop facility, demonstrates the ways in which manufacturing and machines can stimulate the imagination and provide great sources of creativity.

Seasons of Science

For centuries, Oxfordshire has been a hotbed of innovation and scientific excellence. Revolutionary research and astounding discoveries emerge almost daily from our Universities; Oxfordshire’s high technology companies continue to create new products and services which power the region’s economy; scientists, technologists and engineers from Oxfordshire continue to shape the modern world. 2010 sees the 350th Anniversary of The Royal Society and from March to October 2010 Oxford Inspires and Science Oxford put a spotlight on science in a county-wide season of work generated by artists, scientists and educators across Oxfordshire.

Consultants David Powell Associates begin work on Economic Impact Study

Economic Study Will Measure Culture’s Contribution to County’s Well-Being

Cultural industries make up more than 7% of the economy and are one of the fastest growing sectors, with a growth rate twice that of the rest of the economy.

Research into the impact of culture on the county’s prosperity is being commissioned by Oxford Inspires. Funding for an economic impact study has already come from Arts Council England and local agencies, with preliminary work expected to start in the new year.
