Audiograft: the annual festival of incredible sonic riches returns

Audiograft is an annual festival of Contemporary Experimental Music and Sound Art and is curated by the Sonic Art Research Unit at Oxford Brookes University and co-promoted by OCM. The festival will run over 5 days, holding four performances and three exhibitions involving over 25 artists.

The Ashmolean campaigns to save a masterpiece by Manet for the nation

The Ashmolean Museum is mounting a campaign to save Edouard Manet’s Portrait of Mademoiselle Claus, 1868, for the nation. On the advice of the Reviewing Committee, the Culture Minister Ed Vaizey has extended the temporary export bar on the painting until August to give the Ashmolean time in which to raise the funds in order to acquire the painting.
The painting has been sold to a foreign buyer for £28.35 million but, under a private treaty sale, with tax remission it can be purchased by an approved UK public collection at a greatly reduced price. The Ashmolean is approaching public funding bodies, trusts and private individuals, and launching a public campaign to raise the required £7.83 million.

Artists and writers conjure up Other Worlds in large-scale installation at the future Story Museum

Poet, broadcaster and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen, internationally recognised British fantasy artist Roger Dean (designer of the iconic Yes albums), prizewinning poet Kate Clanchy and artist Anita Klein are just a few of the writers and artists who will be turning the home of the future Story Museum – still in its dilapidated state – into a giant art installation with stories at its heart.

Wonderfully wacky Caucus Race will be highlight of Alice's 150th birthday celebrations, 7 and 8 July

The day before the Olympic torch passes through the city, Oxford will be turning convention on its head with its own eccentric forerunner to the Games. A madcap Caucus Race is planned for Alice’s Day, which this year celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first telling of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in Oxford.

Local businesses line up to support Oxford’s bid to become World Book Capital in 2014

Oxford’s bid to become UNESCO World Book Capital in 2014 has recently received a significant amount of support from local businesses.
UNESCO has nominated a World Book Capital city every year since 2001, in order to acknowledge the best year long programme to promote books and encourage reading. Successful bids involve cooperation with local, national and international professional organisations representing writers, publishers, booksellers and librarians, as well as communities and groups.
O3 Gallery to host an exhibition of Olympic inspired art as part of the Cultural Olympiad programme

Tamarin Norwood: Musica Practica

Artist Tamarin Norwood’s residency at Modern Art Oxford concludes with ‘Musica Practica’, a live open-air performance in the centre of Oxford on Sunday 11 March (1.30pm – 4.30pm).
A lone orchestra conductor will perform in public, translating the sounds and everyday movements surrounding him into real-time orchestral choreography. Shifting the traditional relations of authorship, score and performance, conductor and audience simultaneously direct one another’s actions. ‘Musica Practica’ is performed by orchestra conductor Anthony Weeden.

Competition: Dance Writers of the Future 2012

Following a successful project initiated by Ballet in Small Spaces in 2009, Oxford Dance Writers announces a second competition to find talented young dance writers. This year’s competition focuses on the Dancin’ Oxford festival (18th February to 28th March), which will provide multiple opportunities for reflective writing and critique.
