The Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival
The Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival is already one of Britain's must-go literary events. This year the festival will run from Saturday 20th to Sunday 28th March, and will offer a wonderful range of talks, discussions, debates, readings, literary lunches and dinners in the exceptional and beautiful surroundings of Christ Church and Corpus Christi College. The eight day event will see over 350 writers gather to discuss subjects as wide ranging as books, politics, history, the environment and food.
Over the years, the festival has become known for its stimulating and provocative programme and the quality and fearlessness of its debates, and judging by 2010's line up, this year will not disappoint. Highlights include writers Ian McEwan, Robert Harris, A S Byatt and P D James, musician Brian May, journalist Martin Bell, rugby’s Brian Moore, art historian Dan Cruickshank and foodies Tom Parker Bowles and Mark Hix. There are also several high profile events scheduled to take place at the Sheldonian Theatre – the 'architectural jewel' at the heart of historical Oxford – which will include world-class speakers Martin Amis, John le Carré, Anthony Horowitz, Hilary Mantel, and Philip Pullman.
Furthermore, this year sees the re-launch of the Children’s Festival; an outstanding programme designed to complement the main body of the festival. Amongst the highlights are Fantastical Truths, a discussion of what fantasy can tell us about reality, Children Love Picturebooks, where two illustrators talk about the magic that goes into making a beautiful picture book and What on Earth Evolved? 100 Species that Changed the World, which will see Christopher Lloyd take his audience on an unprecedented, interactive and gadget-rich journey through the story of life on Earth.
