Oxford High Street Art Gallery Sells Work Hours into Opening its Door
The Meller Merceux Gallery on Oxford High Street is a new Art Gallery show casing significant modern and contemporary artwork. From highlights such as Picasso and Warhol, to contemporary giants such as Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons, the Gallery sets out to exhibit the best the artworld has to offer. The Gallery is the second Gallery to be set up in Oxfordshire, the first being in Witney.
The brainchild behind the venture is Aidan Meller, the Art dealer that was trained at Sotheby’s. “We are delighted with the response we have had to the opening of the new Gallery on the High Street. After the success in Witney, it is exciting to expand with an Oxford Gallery.”
The opening exhibitions display the artists Andy Warhol and Michael Ashcroft. “We were amazed that we had sold work within hours of opening the door. We knew the venture would be a good one, but we did not expect to sell so quickly.”
The aim is to showcase new work by established and emerging artists, to really put people in touch with what is going on in the artworld. “It’s a very exciting place to be, the artworld can be so often shrouded in mystery. We hope to be able to allow people to participate in it and really enjoy the work,” says Meller.
“The sourcing of the work was quite challenging. Working with collectors in New York and London, we were able to get enough work to be able to put on the shows. With the London auctions doing really well after the collapse of the banks, people have realised Art is still a great item to invest in. Come and see the work before it gets placed with collectors.”
The debut exhibitions are open throughout June.
