Oxford City Council: Celebrating 25 years of Oxford’s Leon Link

Professional opera singer, Quentin Hayes, will be helping to celebrate 25 years of the Oxford Leon link with ‘A Bite at The Opera.” The event is the highlight of a weekend of activities to mark the 25 years of the Oxford – Leon Association, which has been supporting projects in Nicaragua since 1986.


'A Bite at The Opera' takes place in Oxford’s Town Hall and Quentin, along with other professional opera singers, will sing a variety of arias.

There are other events taking place across the city including a discussion about the future of tourism and an evening of food tasting.

Councillor Bob Price, Leader of Oxford City Council, says: “I am delighted that we are celebrating 25 years of the Oxford-Leon link.

“During the 1980s there was a popular movement to twin cities in the UK with counterparts in the developing world, especially with Nicaragua.

“We have support and fundraised for the association for the past 25 years and have seen our links strengthened during those years.”

‘A Bite at The Opera’ takes place on Friday 4 March at 7.30pm in the Town Hall. Balcony seats are still on sale at £15 per ticket. This event is specifically to raise funds for projects in Leon. For tickets please call the Town Hall box office on 01865 252351

A forum on the future of Tourism in Nicaragua takes place on Saturday 5 March at Cheney School from 10am until 1pm. The discussion will focus on how we can support the development of sustainable tourism in and around Leon. There will be presentations from the Nicaraguan Embassy, the Leon Salzburg Link and the Swindon Ocotal Link as well as students from Cheney School. A Taste of Nicaragua is also being held on Saturday 5 March from 7.30pm at the Duke of Monmouth Pub in the Abingdon Road. You will be able to enjoy the Peter ‘Chill out Galpin Trio as well as trying Nicaraguan style food and drink. There will also be a short feature film. All profits from the evening will go towards a project to help women who have been abused in Leon. La Misa Campesina is being held on Sunday 6 March at 11am at Blackfriars Chapel. The final event is a seminar on ‘Nicaragua Today’ which is being held on Monday 7 March at 2pm at the Latin-American Centre at St.Anthony’s College on Woodstock Road. There will be keynote speakers from Spain and the Nicaraguan Embassy in London as well as experts from St Anthony’s College. The seminar will examine the current political situation in Nicaragua and what we have achieved in 25 years. The Oxford Leon link promotes and maintains friendship between the citizens of Oxford and Leon. It supports visits and delegations between the two cities as well as fostering dialogue between councilors and officers of Leon and Oxford. They raise awareness among the people of Oxford abut the life of the people of Leon as well as raising funds which can be used by the Oxford Leon Trust for projects in Leon.

The Oxford Leon Trust is a registered charity which was set up in March 1986 and aims to relieve poverty, sickness, improve education and the provision of or the funding for public works for the improvement of the region. For more information, please visit the website.
