Oxford Brookes University: Creative Campus Initiative

Universities across the UK have joined forces under the banner of the Creative Campus Initiative to create a programme of innovative and dynamic cultural events inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Oxford Brookes is one of 13 higher education institutions to take part in the scheme, which has involved staff, researchers, international artists, students and alumni drawn from departments as wide ranging as Fine Art, Social Sculpture Research Unit, Music and the School of Architecture. For Oxford Brookes, the Creative Campus Initiative has been an opportunity to break down interdisciplinary boundaries within the University, to engage with the wider public and to provide mentoring for both current and alumni students.

Highlights of Oxford Brookes Creative Campus Initiative include:

------------------------------------------------------------------

Where is Culture Located in a Sports Facility?
15 - 16 July 2010

Venue: Oxford Brookes University

This proposal is based on collaboration between students of the Fine Art and Architecture Departments. It seeks to explore the realities and issues of ‘public art’, in particular with relation to sports facilities, and aims to raise debate between students and staff from both disciplines. The project will result in proposals shown through models, imagery and text.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Walking
24 July 2010

Venue: Oxford Brookes University

This proposal seeks to highlight something that we take for granted on a daily basis - or not for those that can’t: the act of walking. It is participatory in its outcome and will involve passers by in the centre of town: each participant, non-disabled and dis-abled will be provided with a ‘manual’ that will guide them through a series of instructions and a ‘route’.

ArtRace
24 July 2010

Venue: Oxford Brookes University

ArtRace is a cycling event created as an art work to link Oxford Brookes University's Wheatley and Headington campuses as well as the area's various centres of health care with Oxford city centre. Developed with local residents, the project supports Headington's emerging identity as a centre of health and learning.

Wallpaper
24 July 2010

Venue: Oxford Brookes University

Based on repetitive print related to repetitive movement in sport, this project will draw on local community centres, city to outlying housing estates. It will result in rolls of wallpaper bearing print in response to a range of sports activities, mounted or projected in the town centre for public view.

Congratulations, You are the most Magnificent Being in all of Existence!
24 - 25 July 2010

Venue: Oxford Brookes University

Fine Art undergraduate Daisy Teage invites staff, students and the public to enjoy a bouncing afternoon on mini trampolines. Each time a bounce is achieved, LED lights illuminate to form a complimentary message for the participants.
