M@SH 9: “Encounters in the Republic of Heaven” by Trevor Wishart
1 June 2011, 1.15pm, 7.00pm and 8.30pm
Venue: Jacqueline du Pré Music Building
Tickets: Free admission
“Encounters” brings together everyday stories told by adults and children with the possibilities of sound-transformation offered by modern technology. The 8-channel sound-surround experience begins with the sound of the wind, formed from tens of thousands of human voices, and gradually unfolds the stories of fishermen, farmers and city-dwellers in the North East of England, accompanied by imaginary musical instruments derived directly from the speaking voices we hear. As each story subsides we encounter a sea of human voices organised in surprising ways - speech that waltzes, speech that harmonises, clouds of speech that circle the audience, culminating with speech that transforms into song.

Hosted by Modern Art Oxford as part of their events programme, the first half will take place in the basement space, responding to an exhibition of work by the artist Haegue Yang on display in the galleries. The second half will then explore situations for improvising music and will take place in the yard space.
