Artist Fern Thomas selected to receive Mostyn Open 2011 Prize
Artist Fern Thomas has been selected from over a thousand artists to receive the prestigious Mostyn Open 2011 Prize for the digital video that OVADA commissioned for last year’s Christmas Light Night event called 'Spotlight'.
Fern will share the prize of £10,000 after the judges decided to split the award between 5 selected artists. Her captivating video entitled Bell in the Cell was filmed in the depths of Oxford Town Hall in one of the now redundant prison cells. A bell is sounded into the dark empty space and with hands stretching upwards against the backdrop of the barred window, the cymbals slowly meet causing a low resonance of sound that vibrates around the room. Presented by OVADA on the stage of the grand Main Hall for Christmas Light Night 2010, the sound simultaneously filled the space and cleared it. Since winning, Fern has been awarded funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to support the second year of Masters Degree in Social Sculpture at Oxford Brookes University.
OVADA gives thanks to Oxford Inspires, Oxford City Council, Oxfordshire County Council and Christmas Light Night partners.
