Art in Woodstock Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

From Saturday 22nd to Sunday 30th October, Woodstock will play host to the fifth annual Art in Woodstock festival.

Showcasing work by visiting professional artists and local talent, the ancient market town of Woodstock will be transformed into a celebration of visual arts. Fifty local, national and international artists will exhibit a variety of work ranging from fine art and sculpture to abstract, contemporary work and installations. The art will be displayed in a number of different venues, including churches, hotels, restaurants and shops, as well as the Woodstock Museum and Town Hall.

Now firmly a fixture in the arts calendar, this festival will show work both for exhibition but also for sale. There will be a public arts space in the town square for adults and children to enjoy, art workshops in the Museum plus a local schools exhibition in the Town Hall. There will also be a number of speaker evenings taking place throughout the week, as well as artwork being produced live around the town by the Plein Art Society.

Another highlight of the festival is the children’s MINI competition, sponsored by the North Oxford MINI garage, where children between the ages of 5 and 14 are invited to produce a Mini roof and bonnet design. The winning designs will be produced on to a real MINI and placed on show in the Town Square.

This year’s invited artists are Jeffrey Kroll, Sofia Koudalakidou, Rodney Salter, Matt Coburn, Rose Wallace and Rod Craig.

Following his successful show at The Saatchi gallery, American abstract artist Jeffrey Kroll will be exhibiting at Art in Woodstock, as well as giving a talk on abstract art on Friday 28th October at the Town Hall. Exhibiting in the Woodstock Museum with Jeffrey is Rodney Salter, whose impressive abstract sculptures in marble, stone, resin and bronze will be on show in the Museum Garden.

Sofia Koudalakidou is an established Greek artist working out of Germany. She will exhibit for the first time in the UK at Art in Woodstock, and will present her piece ‘Waiting’, which is made up of 100 terracotta heads that have all been individually produced. Other works from Koudalakidou’s collection include an abstract peacock sculpture entitled ‘Topos’ and a selection of oil landscapes.

This year’s speakers at Art in Woodstock are Dr Ramina Jamerez, the BBC arts presenter, speaking on Icons and Symbolism, Jeffrey Kroll on 20th Century abstract art, Tom Freshwater on Trust New Art, a 3 year project between the Arts Council and The National Trust, Peter Forsaith, curator of the Methodist Church collection of modern art and children’s TV and Radio presenter Arabella Warner.
