Under Construction Theatre Company: Calling all Performers!
Under Construction was formed in 2007 and are committed to creating unique, participatory theatrical experiences in unusual sites. Their 2010 performance, entitled Tightrope, is an experiment in combining modern devised performance with the early-English music of William Byrd and his contemporaries. By drawing ideas directly from Byrd’s lyrics, as well as from the personal struggles that the composers encountered through their work, the group aim to bring this beautiful, but lesser known period of music to new audiences in an innovative way.
In preparation for the final performance of Tightrope in May, Under Construction are looking for performers to take part in a two day devising workshop on the 12th and 13th April. The workshop will be based in St Mary the Virgin, an ancient city centre church rich in history and atmosphere, and it is here that participants will be invited to explore the theatrical possibilities of storytelling through devised theatre, dance and song.
Workshop attendees will spend the two days exploring the theme of personal belief – belief in the spiritual, religion, science, magic and fairytales – in order to create short devised pieces that will be performed throughout the site at the end of the second day.
Workshops include ‘Early-English Music’, which will be led by experts in the field and ‘Historical Dance’, with experienced choreographer and Renaissance dance expert, Diana Scrivener Blair. Sessions will also be held on creating site-specific performance with the company’s performers and artists.
No prior knowledge of these fields, or previous experience in singing, reading music or dance is necessary, all that is required is a mind open to new and exciting projects!
Entry to the two day workshops is charged at £25 per person, however some subsidised places (for those who do not normally get the chance to engage with this sort of work) may be available on request.
