Theatre Futures Oxford: Training Opportunities
Oxfordshire Theatre Company has received a grant from the Charity of Thomas Dawson to develop their new Theatre Futures Oxford Scheme. Theatre Futures Oxford is a work based traineeship for young people aged 18 – 25 years old living in Oxford, who want a career in theatre production.
Many talented young people with great potential do not have the access, networks or support to gain entry into the theatre sector. Theatre Futures Oxford will support and provide a bursary to up to 6 young people this year with the opportunity for each to spend 6 weeks with professional artists and the entire staff team.
Louise Wiggins, Administrative Director of Oxfordshire Theatre Company, commented, "We are delighted to have received this grant, which enables us to pilot the scheme this year. Young people will gain hands on experience in a professional environment to take into their future careers. Oxfordshire Theatre Company is committed to giving young people as many opportunities as possible and it’s exciting the programme will help to develop this further. By providing a small bursary to the successful applicants we are able to help alleviate some of the financial implications that restrict young people applying for a scheme such as this."
The traineeship is designed to equip young people with strong skills in theatre production. Karen Simpson, Artistic Director of Oxfordshire Theatre Company explained "This challenging programme will provide an insight into all aspects of a touring theatre company. The young people involved will work on our family production Alice in Wonderland along side stage managers, lighting designers, set designers, and myself as director of the show."
Whilst there is no job opportunity at the end of the traineeships the Company can offer letters of support and references, and provide assistance in applying for jobs or applications to further or higher education Oxfordshire Theatre Company is now accepting applications. Each traineeship will take place between November 2010 and March 2011. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 29th September 2010.
