Rodney Bewes in Three Men In a Boat - Supporting KENTON for KEEPS

Actor Rodney Bewes is the latest in a line of local professional actors who has agreed to perform to support the Kenton for Keeps fund and its an event that will have a special place in history for its the last time the actor intends to perform his one-man show Three Men in a Boat.

The man who became one of British television's best known faces in the sixties with the hit show The Likely Lads brings his version of the Jerome .K .Jerome novel to the Kenton Theatre in Henley on June 23rd and 24th.

He has been touring the show for ten years driving from venue to venue with his wife Daphne and towing a trailer with his props.

The Kenton could not be more fitting venue for Three Men in a Boat as in the novel the three men - George,Harris ,'J' and Montmorency the dog - pass through Henley just four hundred yards from the theatre.

'It's brilliant, and such fun, it's something I'm really proud of,' says the effervescent Yorkshire-born star who who has homes in Henley and Cornwall.

Together with James Bolam he helped create the memorable comedy duo of Bob and Terry in both the Likely Lads and the equally successful seventies follow-up Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads.

Extraordinarily the two haven't spoken for more than 34 years, after a remark by Bewes in a newspaper interview. It's something that still upsets and bewilders Bewes, but meanwhile he's enjoying taking his show round the country.

Half of the proceeds will be donated to the Kenton for Keeps fund which has until the end of this month to sign an agreement to pay £350,000 needed to buy the freehold of the property, thus securing its future as a theatre, for ever. So far £150,000 has been raised thanks to the generosity of local people and several big donors. Several other fund raising events have been organised for the summer including an outdoor production in August and a lunch and auction on Temple Island in September.
