Creation Celebrate 15th Anniversary Year with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
Creation Theatre Company is this year celebrating its 15th anniversary of presenting lively and accessible open air Shakespeare productions in Oxford. This summer its new production is Romeo and Juliet to be performed in the stunning rooftop Amphitheatre at the Saïd Business School 9 July – 4 September (Press night 20 July). No need to worry about possible rain as Creation’s show is completely ‘weatherproofed’ – if it rains then the performance takes place indoors in the Nelson Mandela Theatre.
The company are celebrating their birthday season by giving Oxford audiences a special offer of free children’s tickets for Romeo and Juliet. Bookers ringing Creation box office between 1- 30 June can get one free under 12s ticket when purchasing a full price adult ticket, however, early booking is advisable as there is limited availability on this offer.
Romeo and Juliet director is Creation favourite, Charlotte Conquest, who has been responsible for some of the company’s most acclaimed recent productions such as Othello in 2009 and Much Ado About Nothing in 2008. She sees Romeo and Juliet as a dark play set in a world of violence both physical and emotional where friendship and humour are important as the characters seek to ward off the many threats that surround them.
Juliet will be played by Creation newcomer, Amy Noble, who in 2007 received a commendation in the prestigious Ian Charleston Awards for her role in Chains at Richmond’s Orange Tree. Patrick Myles plays Romeo and Nicky Goldie is the Nurse. Three other members of the cast – Caroline Devlin, Richard Kidd and James Sobol Kelly – are all returning to the company having appeared in previous Creation shows.
David Parrish, Creation’s Artistic and Executive Director, said today “I am delighted that 14 summers after Creation’s very first production, Romeo and Juliet, at Magdalen College School, we are once more revisiting the same Shakespeare play in an exciting new production. Our first Romeo & Juliet was seen by 3500 people now 15 years later we expect to see Creation’s total audience attendance pass the 350000 milestone during the year. Thanks to the huge success of our Twelfth Night last year plus the generosity of our supporters and Friends of Creation our finances are now much restored and we look forward to a very successful summer performing again in the wonderful rooftop setting at the Said Business School, which was such a popular venue with our audiences last year.”
